Reverse Engineering MS SQL Server 2005 Database

I have just downloaded the trial SQL Server version of ModelRight for evaluation and am trying to Reverse Engineer a database.

I cannot get the Select Database dialog to connect to my database. Dropping down the Server dropdown doesn't give me a list of my SQL Servers as other tools do, and even when I manually type in my server name I get a Database Connection Error: State: IM002 when I click on Next.

I also am not given the option to use Windows Authentication.

    What's up?

Re: Reverse Engineering MS SQL Server 2005 Database

Its probably because to connect to SQL Server, ModelRight requires an ODBC connection.  We don't rely on it for information about your SQL Server database - we will pick up any/all SQL Server specific objects and properties - we just use it to transfer the data.

To create an ODBC data source, bring up the Control Panel, select Administrative Tools, and then select Data Sources (ODBC). Click on the Add button and then the SQL Server driver. Proceed with the rest of the wizard.

We'll look into the Windows Authentication issue.

Thank you for your reply. It works now, although it does seem somewhat inelegant to have to install an ODBC DataSource for a product designed for MS SQL Server.

Personally, I agree.  Let me see if we can improve that.  In the meantime, thanks for trying it with ODBC, and please let us know if you have any other issues.

Re: Reverse Engineering MS SQL Server 2005 Database

This has been improved in Build 3032.  You can now either select an ODBC data source or enter the name of a server (or server/database - or any number of connection string options) - without creating an ODBC data source.  Also, Windows Authentication has  been enabled for SQL Server.

BTW, as of SQS 2005, ODBC is considered native support by Microsoft.
